The Sun Gateway

Puerta del Sol Toledo, Spain. It is a medieval gate, dating to the last quarter of the fourteenth century. Its style is Mudejar and built to provide access to the walled city. Named after a relief on the side outside the walls, which among others features the sun.

Mainly of a Nazari influence, it is an «albarrana» gate, ie located outside the city walls, which served as a defense. In this case however, it was commemorative. The entrance arch is a horseshoe arch and is embraced by a pointed horseshoe arch. It was built in stone, ashlar work and masonry. The Battlements, the Inlets and the frieze of the door are brick, with lobed arches intertwined.
