The combination of the materials used in the old and modern structures together with the enhancement of the tile is unique and is a hallmark of what we can enjoy today, both in Lisbon and in many areas of Portugal. The tiles are used in palaces, residences, temples, historical buildings and in many railway stations of the country.
A very significant fact that changed the way of building in terms of materials, was the earthquake that occurred in 1755 that caused significant damage in Portugal, especially in Lisbon. This misfortune allowed the leadership of the Marquis of Pombal to flourish, who immediately undertook the task of rebuilding his country.
As part of the reconstruction activities, the “Real Fábrica do Rato” was built in Lisbon for the manufacture of tiles. The use of the tile was used in the reconstruction of the structures not only as a decorative element, but also to support it. In addition, it was cheaper than the use of stone. With this act, the Marquis of Pombal revives and expands the use of panels painted in blue on white.
It is a great experience to walk around Lisbon, Sintra, Porto, Braga and Tomar and to be able to enjoy the variety of stories told by the tiles of Portugal, through their designs, textures, colors and sizes.
