In the Buen Retiro park, we find the Monument to Jacinto Benavente by the sculptor Victorio Macho and inaugurated on April 24, 1962.
Jacinto Benavente y Martinez stood out as a playwright, director, screenwriter and producer for Spanish Cinema. He was born on August 12, 1866 in Leon Street in Madrid. He began studying law at the Central University of Madrid, but upon the death of his father in 1885 and thanks to the inheritance received, abandoned his studies to devote himself to literature and travel through France and Russia.
In 1892 he published his first work, “Teatro fantástico”, which is followed by a book of poems, “Versos”, a short story, “Villanos” and one of criticism, “Cartas de mujeres” all surfaced the following year. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922.
